A professor is giving the first year medical students their first lecture on autopsies, and decides to give them a few basics before starting.

"You must be capable of two things to do an autopsy. The first thing is you must have no sense of fear." At this point the lecturer sticks his finger in the dead man's anus, and then licks it.
He then asks all the students to do the same to the corpses in front of them. After a couple of minutes silence they follow suit.
"The second thing is that you must have an acute sense of observation: I stuck my middle finger into the corpse's anus, but I licked my index."

It's going to be a tough year I think, so lets just set the mood. Number one on the list: Save my 35mm camera, then prepare to take a trip.

First visit to Portland Oregon. Although too in raptured in the moment and forgetting my camera 95% of the time to capture all the highlights (which were far too many) here is a small, sweet fraction of the city i am planning to call home.. Fuck. and i miss it.

My fish died unexpectedly yesterday. It sucked. But a friend cheered me up with this little poem:

Here is a memorial poem for fish.

Fish was not quite a fish of old
His scales were red, his attitude cold
His death unexpected
From an aquatic plant infected

Fish friend to Fred
A chum whose silence lead
To many a quiet evening near the bed
Even though you are dead
Your memory will live on in film and photo
Let's hope your heaven is a large puddle in Kyoto
Where many a lady is to be found
Unlike in the glass vase you used to swim around

Par un clair matin (Part 1 of 3)

Dian was stuck in gridlock, the itch of drowsy boredom settling in. Once more she glanced at the driver next to her, cautiously surveying their expressions. They all sat like life sized dolls in 4000 pound casings, quietly waiting. Dian caught one looking back at her which sent a jolt to spring in her chest. She scrambled to escape the driver's eyes but finding nothing to fix on she fluttered her lashes as if agitated by something and looked away, not daring to glimpse back. She could feel herself being watched for a moment, palpable like the warmth of a broken sun beam. But after returning to the traffic before, she dissolved back into her drifting mind.

Gazing at the clusters of faint smudges peppered on the windshield, Dian began to study the details usually invisible during morning commute. Some smears were radiating especially by the sun's light, reaching for her attention. On the far end of the pane over the the passenger seat she noticed someone had traced the shape of a heart on the glass. It was small, a little lopsided and completely lovely. A bit overwhelmed by the surprise of minute sweetness so early in the morning Dian impulsively drew a little halo hovering above it. Immediately Dian realized she had spoiled the doodle's quiet perfection and silently smudged out the addition with her sleeve. It looked wounded now, and the sleeve had created a clean globular spot, a void, where the halo once hung; a twinge of guilt.

Dian wondered whom it could have belonged to and thought the past few days drive. But before a conclusion made its way the swelling metallic hum of moving traffic brought her back to the wheel and straight toward work.

A Quiet Find For Whales

"Bill, looking into your lopsided breast isn't the best thing in the world for me right now and I mean that."  She slapped away his noodle limp fist before it could hit her, sending waves throughout the water bed as she stood, rising above him in perfect balance. His reaction was as predictable as the humiliation was numbing. "Fuck you-- and your ceiling!" He said looking up at her, weeping slightly onto his naked belly. He felt himself drowning.

  Bill caught a view of the lawn below through the open bedroom window, observing the celebration that took place beyond her thigh. All those people destroying his grass, littering his former home. Easter was never supposed to be an option for him; it was stipulated and agreed upon. But, how did he fool himself back into this house that cared only for his resourcefulness as a court ordered cash cow, never as father or lover. Bill, controlled by his lonely nature, raised his arms to wrap around his ex wife's waist in a pitiful gesture of apology- when it hit him:

"Oh my Goodness." he whispered. The goddamn whale would live. It would work! After four years, an irrefutable cure for the one animal on earth that had no ill ambition to sling at the half naked scientist. Bill thought of his Revelation as divinity loaning itself as a gift to the great beast for the escape it provided him, and for the struggling department he helmed that certainly would now stay afloat in the funds the cure would garner. His extended arms were still before him and felt the warm light upon their aged skin absorb. Looking down at the changing man, she saw his eyes and face glaze in a calm.

But what was it worth now? kneeling in a wobble before an ungrateful ex whom he had fought so diligently to befriend; albeit as a guise to eventually resotring himself in this home. The boys? A doltish consideration for the person he was. Her kids never would have mattered. All ambition for the mediocre life as "friend to the family" withered like a leech with nothing to nourish on. The pain of being owner to a love that would never be nurtured found a dark corner in him to hide away and be forgotten. He was blind to the woman. His mind swam with figures and formulas all around the magnificence he had been struck by when first looking into the eyes of the dying blue whale.

  He made peace with what the next few minutes would scar into his life and spoke to his ex with a finality both had never heard, "One day you'll catch yourself and see what it is to be around you. I only feel sorry that you won't have the same option as everyone will one day consider." He spit on her feet and left the room in three steps, ending 43 years with a slam of the door that muffled her laughter. 'This fish better give a fuck' he thought jogging shirtless and free along the cluttered driveway that led to his modest car. The tears on his belly now drying to the cool spring air.

The Roadside Windows

"I might not like it, leave me one of your eggs." Lady snored into the table.
Barny looked over her dandruff, contemplating his new found fondness for it. "Do you know I know much about the pancake? " he spoke to her scalp. She brought her head up into view. Her cheek illuminated the floating filaments in the air. "What's a griddlecake?" she asked. "Those are pancakes." he said. "No! God yes. I ate that once and couldn't finish my plate. Texture. It resembled flesh of walrus."

A crash of dishes and pans came from the kitchen.

Lady spoke into her sleeve, "Thank you, I'm happy I let you order." She sat up squeaking in her part of the booth, taking a look around the faces of the rest stop. Another crash of sheet metal on tile. Both now peering to the kitchen that scrambled behind large silvery towers. Neither understood Spanish chatter.

It would only be a few more miles to the border, 26 perhaps. Barney went over the map in his head, following the vein of highway left for them to travel. He stared into the orchid tabletop pattern in his field of vision. Outside the large windows the morning was young enough to expect good time on the stretch ahead. After this meal it would be the final leg of the trip. Finally across, barney could then be on his back relaxing for once in his life with Lady.

Breakfast was placed before the two with a clank of the plates by their waitress in green stockings and apron. Barney watched the waitress write up the total, tear the bill from her pad and place it over the orchids. "Switch?" he asked Lady. "I'll just have one, you take the rest for me." She said as her fork and index finger pieced apart the smallest of the cakes.

Barney sat in silence to the image before him. No invisible weight to sag her confident shoulders, or a medicated haze in the face unlike the others he had loved. It was a rebirth. Now well on her way to the hands of human hearts that would nurse Lady for health's sake. Barney very much wished for those hands to be his, but this was the best he could manage.

She looked at him, "Barney, don't you go one minute in your life -from now on -without knowing-- realizing I'm different because of what we've made it through ... and all that shit ... And this has been the biggest thing between me and you, okay? We are me and you because of it. So thank you, if I haven't said it already." Barney held the coffee mug warm between his sandpaper grip, and looked to her glow. "Enough to light a cigarette if I could." he said. She mimed lighting one in her mouth and blew the smoke in his face.

The kitchen was resettling now, the morning was getting younger.
